What is the Box Gum Grassy Woodland Lachlan Murrumbidgee Central West Project?
The project is part of the Australian Government's Caring for our Country - Environmental Stewardship, helping land managers to protect the environment on their land.
Private land managers within the Lachlan, Murrumbidgee and Central West Catchment Management Authority boundaries in New South Wales who have the critically endangered White Box, Yellow Box and/or Blakely's Red Gum grassy woodland or derived grassland on their properties are currently being targeted under Caring for our Country - Environmental Stewardship.
Land managers who have expressed interest in participating in the project and meet the eligibility criteria will be invited to submit a price (bid) for which they would be prepared to undertake agreed management actions to conserve Box Gum Grassy Woodland or derived grassland of more than 10 hectares in area on their land. All sites will be scored using a decision support tool (Conservation Value Measure). The site score will be divided by the bid price to develop a Conservation Value Index (CVI) for the site. All bids will be ranked according to their CVI from highest to lowest reflecting a value-for-money continuum. This forms an important part of the evaluation of the bids but other factors will also be considered in determining successful bids.
Land managers whose bids are successful can enter into financial contracts with the Australian Government for up to fifteen years.
BGGW Prioritisation Strategy - Requests for Site Assessments
The Request for Site Assessment phase is now closed. For more information phone 1800 239 453. The Murrumbidgee, Lachlan and Central West CMAs have been asked by the Australian Government to collectively undertake a total of 150 site assessments under this funding round.
In order to manage expected demand and to meet the Australian Governments target with sites that most closely reflect the Australian Government's investment priorities, individual requests for site visits will be prioritised according to the following principles:
- Larger sites will be given priority over smaller sites (note there is a 10 ha minimum size requirement)
- Sites that have not previously been grazed will be given priority over sites that have been previously grazed which in turn will be prioritised ahead of sites that have been previously grazed and fertilised.
- Sites that provide significant linkages between remnants will be favoured over isolated patches or similar sites that do not provide habitat linkages (this will be assessed using remote imagery)
