About this document
This document provides a Strategic Framework for Caring for our Country Environmental Stewardship (Environmental Stewardship) and describes the overarching principles, approaches, outcomes and governance structures. This Framework will guide implementation of Environmenal Stewardship and provides stakeholders with an overview of this initiative.
Environmental Stewardship will invest in a number of projects, targeting priority high public value environmental assets across the nation. An individual and tailored Implementation Plan will be developed for each individual asset.
A wide range of programs are available in Australia to provide incentives for land managers to achieve conservation outcomes on private land. These address a variety of objectives, employ a range of methods and are delivered via different organisations including the Australian Government, State, Territory and local governments, natural resource management (NRM) regional bodies, indigenous groups, industry organisations and other nongovernment organisations.
Environmental Stewardship will address a policy gap in the provision of payments for longterm protection of high value environmental assets. It will complement the use of existing policy approaches such as regulation, grant programs, setting aside land in national parks and reserves and voluntary conservation on private land through covenants and other mechanisms.
Environmental Stewardship may contribute to achieving outcomes under the following Caring for our Country national priorities:
- The National Reserve System;
- Biodiversity and national icons;
- Coastal environment and critical aquatic habitats;
- Sustainable farm practices; and
- Community skills, knowledge and engagement.
