About this document
This document provides a Strategic Framework for funding under the Australian Government's Caring for our Country - Environmental Stewardship, and describes the program's overarching principles, approaches, outcomes and governance structures. This Framework will guide implementation of Environmental Stewardship and provides stakeholders with an overview of the program.
Environmental Stewardship will invest in a number of projects, targeting priority high public value environmental assets across the nation. An individual and tailored Implementation Plan will be developed for each individual asset.
A wide range of programs are available in Australia to provide incentives for land managers to achieve conservation outcomes on private land.
Environmental Stewardship will address a policy gap in the provision of payments for long-term protection of high value environmental assets. It will complement the use of existing policy approaches such as regulation, grant programs, setting aside land in national parks and reserves and voluntary conservation on private land through covenants and other mechanisms.
