About this document
Why do we need to monitor soil organic carbon?
Monitoring levels of soil organic carbon provides a good measure of the impact of land management on soil health. Exploitative, environmentally damaging land management practices tend to reduce soil carbon levels. Monitoring is also necessary to support the needs of the National Carbon Accounting System (NCAS) to meet international reporting requirements (i.e. for the measurement of greenhouse gas emissions).
