What is the Australian Government Envirofund?

Envirofund is a funding program that helps local communities undertake important on-ground environmental activities such as replanting and fencing. It is the community section of the Australian Government’s $3 billion Natural Heritage Trust.

Since it began in April 2002, Envirofund has provided financial support for nearly 4000 projects to the tune of $59 million. Two rounds of funding are offered each financial year, totaling $20 million.

How much funding can be applied for?

Grants of up to $50,000 are available. Applicants must contribute towards the total cost of the project in cash and/or in-kind support. Envirofund will generally provide up to one dollar for every dollar or in-kind equivalent contributed.

If funding is approved, you need to ensure you have insurance cover including at least $10 million in public liability, as well as workers’ compensation, personal accident and/or volunteer workers’

If your group is not incorporated, you will need to arrange a sponsoring organisation to accept and administer funding on your behalf. A sponsoring organisation must be a legal entity such as your local government or an incorporated community group.

Local councils and State and Territory governments cannot apply for funding (local governments of Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Island are excepted).
