About this document
The Envirofund program is the local action component of the Australian Government’s $3 billion Natural Heritage Trust (NHT). Since 2002, over 4600 projects have been funded throughout Australia over seven funding rounds. Grants of up to $50 000 are given to community organisations and incorporated individual farm businesses to undertake on-ground works and other activities aimed at conserving biodiversity and promoting sustainable resource use.
The Centre for International Economics (CIE) has undertaken this review of Envirofund. The review has examined the effectiveness of on-ground works funded in meeting local environmental problems, whether the program is moving groups towards broader regional approaches to natural resource management (NRM), the engagement of coastal/marine and Indigenous groups in Envirofund, the effectiveness of the facilitator network in assisting community groups, and the effectiveness of Envirofund’s publicity and communication activities.
