Landcare Group assisting farmers with spray drift management
The Brigalow Jimbour Floodplain Landcare Group in Queensland's Condamine region is achieving significant environmental goals as a result of a collective approach to land management.
The Group has identified 144 local sites as needing action.
Funding
The Condamine Alliance received $350,000 from the Australian and State Governments to deal with environmental concerns across seven sub-catchment areas. Additional support has also come from the State Government, local government and business, resulting in a total of $1.3 million.
Activities and Achievements
The initiative aims to help protect creek and river areas by reducing the impact of chemicals in waterways. It is also cutting the impact of feral cats and foxes on native fauna and reducing the number of weeds and feral animals.
"Other concerns include addressing salinity risks through identifying recharge and hazard areas and accelerating positive surface management" Brigalow Jimbour Floodplain Group coordinator Nevin Olm said.
The group has fenced off more than seven kilometres of river and creeks and set up additional stock watering facilities.
Seven workshops have been held, targeting 176 farmers and focusing on providing techniques for managing drift from spraying and chemicals. Landholders have also received a financial incentive to subsidise nozzles to prevent spray drift.
"We have received feedback that the spray drift practices are working," said Nevin. "A local farmer suggested that for the first time in 10 years there was no noticeable spray drift."
The Landcare Group is also keen to raise cultural heritage awareness through workshops, schools and the distribution of a local newsletter.
