Narrawa locals restore eroded gully
Narrawa landholder Edward Proudford is playing his part in looking after the local environment by tackling gully erosion on his property, which is located between Boroowa and Crookwell.
Funding
In early 2006 Edward received almost $70,000 from the Australian Government, and additional support from the State Government, through the Lachlan Catchment Management Authority (CMA). Edward also contributed a substantial amount of his personal funds to the project.
The combined funding has helped the Proudfoot family fence off 12.5 kilometres of eroded gully, establish new stock watering points and restore trees.
"It's great stuff getting the grant. But it's not a piece of cake - you have to be prepared to work," Edward said.
Activities
The newly established dams have already made a difference.
"We built two dams after we fenced off the gully. The dams stop erosion heading further up the hill and also water the stock," Edward said.
"The stormwater goes into the dams and then disperses evenly over the country. It eventually finds its way back to the creek but not in a concentrated form."
Edward has also put up new fences and is planning to plant 20,000 trees this spring.
Achievements
"The beauty of the fencing is that it makes boom spraying easier because there's a straight line to work off and chemicals are kept a long way from the creek.
"It's a win for the environment and a win for us."
