What is NRM?

North East - Natural Resource Management region

Regional summary

Map of the region

The North East region of Victoria comprises 1,980,000 hectares and is home to a population of 94,400, located predominantly in Wodonga and Wangaratta. The region is an area rich in natural assets; its industries include agriculture (dairy, beef, lamb, wool, cropping and horticulture), forest industries and value-added processing industries. More than 55 percent of the North East consists of public land, encompassing more than 200 reserves, including national parks, wilderness parks and historic reserves.

Priority issues

Key natural resource management issues in the region include:

Regional plan

The North East Catchment Management Authority was responsible for developing the North East regional plan, in consultation with the local community. This plan was based on a whole-of-region approach and addresses significant NRM issues incorporating social, environmental and economic aspects.

Once the regional plan was accredited, the North East Catchment Management Authority was responsible for developing the regional investment strategy. This is essentially the business plan that will be developed to attract investment from the Australian and state governments and details the specific actions, costs and timeframes required to implement the regional plan.

The region has undertaken significant works in partnership with the local community to improve river health. It implemented 14 waterway action plans this financial year, with more than 70 landholders participating. It also carried out maintenance and emergency works.

The Trust funded Care of Remnants Incentive Scheme has been highly effective protecting remnant native vegetation and associated biodiversity on private land throughout the region. The project is a partnership of communities, government and environmental organisations.

This project encourages landowners to establish sustainable management practices for remnant bushland areas.

Phase one of the scheme, finalised early in 2002, resulted in:

Phase two is in progress and achievements to date include:

In addition it has established more than 30 hectares of revegetation links to join remnant vegetation areas.
