Border Rivers and Maranoa-Balonne - Natural Resource Management region
Regional summary

The Queensland Murray Darling Committee Incorporated is the regional body for the Border Rivers Maranoa-Balonne natural resource management region. This region covers an area of 102,730 square kilometres stretching from the Carnarvon Ranges in the north, to the Queensland-New South Wales border in the south, and from Mungallala in the west to about 20 kilometres east of Miles. The regional boundaries include the Moonie and Border Rivers and their tributaries within Queensland and the Maranoa and Balonne rivers. Main towns include Roma, Miles, St George, Goondiwindi and Stanthorpe.
Principle land uses are grazing natural vegetation and modified pastures, production forestry and dryland cropping. Wheat and barley crops account for the greatest area of cropping while other crops include sorghum, chickpeas, mungbeans, canola, milllet, grazing oats and dryland cotton.
Priority issues
Priority issues identified for the Border Rivers Maranoa-Balonne region include:
- dryland salinity and sustainable land management
- management of water quantity and quality
- riverine and floodplain ecosystem health
- weed and feral animal management
- threats to biodiversity and ecosystem services from habitat loss and modification
- energy and waste management
Regional plan
Queensland Murray Darling Committee Incorporated and South West Natural Resource Management Limited, in consultation with local communities, developed a joint regional plan that covers both the Border Rivers Maranoa-Balonne and South West Queensland natural resource management regions. This plan is based on a whole-of-region approach and addresses significant natural resource management issues incorporating social, environmental and economic aspects.

Current activities
The future of the Border Rivers Maranoa-Balonne region lies with the community's inspiration to build a healthy environment. The vision for the region is a whole community supporting and taking responsibility for integrating the management of land, water and related resources and achieving the sustainable and balanced use of these resources.
