What is NRM?

What is Natural Resource Management?

The sustainable management of Australia's natural resources (our land, water, marine and biological systems) is vital if we are to ensure our ongoing social, economic and environmental wellbeing.

This web site is hosted by the Australian Government. It provides information about the integrated delivery of two Australia-wide natural resource management (NRM) initiatives: the National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality (NAP) and the Natural Heritage Trust (the Trust).

The planning and implementation of these NRM initiatives is based on regional needs.

Across Australia, 56 NRM regions have been identified. Each region has produced integrated regional NRM plans and investment strategies, which helped identify and coordinate actions that addressed issues specific to a particular region. Each region's funding from the NAP and the Trust is driven by these NRM plans and investment strategies.

In addition to developing regional NRM initiatives, support is provided to high-priority national and statewide activities.

Integrating the NAP and the Trust

Both the NAP and the Trust are driven by specific regional plans, supported by government following development within local communities. Environmental management is improved through this engagement with the particular needs of each region.

Integrating delivery of the NAP and the Trust streamlines the planning and implementation of this process at the regional level. This was achieved through the use of a single accredited natural resource management plan and a single investment strategy in each region. Additionally, certain other processes within the two programmes were aligned, including:
