Engaging communities
Australia's progress towards a healthy environment and the sustainable use of natural resources depends on the actions of individuals, groups and communities.
Community organisations play a vital role in protecting and restoring the environment. Many community-based groups and organisations have led on-ground delivery in environmental protection and sustainable production for many years. The Landcare movement is celebrating more than 20 years of communities and landholders working together, achieving both biodiversity conservation and productivity improvements.
Regional natural resource management organisations, industries and non-government organisations play an important role in supporting their local communities to undertake projects. State and territory governments also have a role in supporting community groups.
The Australian Government supports community organisations engaged in natural resources management through Caring for our Country.
Community skills, knowledge and engagement is one of the six national priorities of Caring for our Country, outlined in the Caring for our Country Outcomes Statement 2008-2013. Community engagement underpins activity in all the priority areas of Caring for our Country.
Community organisations help deliver projects, or elements of projects, that contribute to Caring for our Country targets.
