Measuring performance through indicators
Natural resource management (NRM) performance can be measured through certain indicators.
Each 'matter for target' identified in the National framework for natural resource management standards and targets has an overall indicator, called a 'heading indicator'. These heading indicators list recommended indicators (also known as resource condition indicators) that suggest how to measure the various dimensions related to each indicator.
Over time, more than one way of measuring the same outcome may be identified.
Approval of the indicators
All indicators were approved by the Monitoring and Evaluation Working Group (MEWG). The MEWG was advised by a range of groups with the relevant technical expertise to develop the indicators. Wherever possible, measurement methods were based on methods that had been agreed upon and were already in use.
Purpose of the indicators
The primary purpose of the indicators is to measure the performance of investments made under programs such as the National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality (NAP) and the Natural Heritage Trust (the Trust).
The use of consistent measurement methods also enables data collected to contribute to overall assessments of resource conditions. Not all indicators are targeted for measurement. Regional bodies ensure that monitoring of indicators occurs.
