Community Coastcare Closed
Applications for Community Coastcare closed at 5pm AEST on Friday 25 July 2008.
Community Coastcare applications are currently being assessed. The Hon. Peter Garrett MP Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts and Hon. Tony Burke MP Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry will announce successful applications in late 2008.
Project activities are expected to commence from January 2009 once a contract for the project has been agreed and executed with the Commonwealth.
What is Community Coastcare?
Community Coastcare is part of the Caring for our Country package of activities contributing to the coastal environments and critical aquatic habitats priority outcome.
Future opportunities for funding to contribute to the coastal environments and critical aquatic habitats priority outcome will be included in the annual Caring for our Country Business Plan.
National priorities
All Community Coastcare projects will contribute to Caring for our Country national priorities by
- protecting and rehabilitating Coastal environments and critical aquatic habitats and
- enhancing community skills, knowledge and engagement with Indigenous Australians, volunteers and coastal communities.
Who can apply?
You can apply for funding if you are
- an incorporated community group
- an unincorporated community groups sponsored by a legal entity (such as a local or state government or regional natural resource management body)
- a non-government incorporated organisation such as rotary clubs, companies, conservation groups, fishing and tourism industries
- a public or private school
- a Landcare group
- a surf club
- an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander corporation or council
- a local government
- a regional natural resource management body
- an individual, trust or partnership or
- a State Government agency (for larger-scale projects only)
When is the closing date?
Applications closed 5.00 pm Friday 25 July 2008.
What size are the grants?
Community Coastcare will provide two levels of funding:
- small grants up to $50,000; and
- grants for larger-scale activities in high priority areas up to $250,000.
What can be funded?
Small grants will support a variety of activities to protect and rehabilitate coastal waterways and wetlands, prevent coastal erosion, enhance skills and knowledge, record and pass on traditional knowledge, protect nesting sites, Indigenous cultural landscapes and culturally sensitive sites.
In addition, applications for grants for larger-scale activities must demonstrate a substantial contribution to national priorities in areas of high conservation value, such as nationally significant coastal wetlands. These projects must also deliver substantial outcomes in terms of:
- improved water quality and
- rehabilitation and/or protection of nationally significant coastal zones and coastal hotspots for water quality and biodiversity.
Larger-scale activities must also demonstrate a substantial contribution to the protection of matters of national environmental significance in identified coastal hotspot areas, threatened species and ecological communities.
