What can I do?

Eden - Bush tucker now on the menu

Bush tucker is being served outside Eden, NSW, thanks to a recent grant from the Australian Government Envirofund.

Envirofund is the local action component of the Australian Government's $3 billion the Trust, providing funds that help communities undertake local projects aimed at conserving biodiversity and promoting sustainable resource use.

The Indigenous tourism venture, Jigamy Youth Camp Rehabilitation and Keeping Place was recently successful in securing a grant for just over $23,000, which will be used to complete the Keeping Place walking track and to plant a variety of bush tucker.

The project is jointly managed by Auswide Projects, a registered training organisation with more than 10 years' experience in labour market programs and youth-focused programs, and local Aboriginal groups.

Auswide Projects CEO, Mr Kevin Stevens, said while other people talked about effective, progressive partnerships, his company was walking the talk. "Auswide has had long-term links with the Koori community through Aboriginal members on our board. So we are actually doing it, not just talking about it," Mr Stevens said.

Board member Ossie Cruse says he is happy with the partnership, which allows for Aboriginal people to be involved in restoration and development of aboriginal culture. "The idea is to have the tourists visit the Keeping Place, walk the track and subsequently, touch, smell and taste bush tucker," he said.

The Jigamy Youth Camp Rehabilitation and Keeping Place is to be one of the most exciting tourist attractions on the far South Coast of NSW.

The venue consists of a museum, restaurant, function room, retail section and walking track; providing a tourist attraction for the big tour ships docking at the Eden wharf. Visitors will be educated on bush tucker and invited to sample it for themselves.
