Soils
in Focus in Deepwater |
This
project will develop skills and knowledge of landholders in the Deepwater
area regarding the monitoring and management of soil health. The area has typically acid granite soils
with low organic soil carbon levels, often resulting in reduced groundcover,
poor pasture growth and over grazing. These issues also contribute to other natural resource problems such
as soil erosion, poor water quality and sedimentation of waterways. This
project will deliver improved skills and knowledge in the monitoring and
management of soil health through a combination of workshops, soil testing
and field days. |

Peri Urban Capacity and Biodiversity in the NW Slopes of NSW |
The
Inverell region has seen a marked increase in the number of peri urban
landholders. These landholders from land on the fringe of urban centres
demonstrate a lack of knowledge of sustainable NRM and its importance. Their
proximity to farming land and urban centres means this group is a vital link
in our region's sustainability. This project will hold a series of 4 field
days will be held and focus on themes of biodiversity, weed identification
and management, groundcover / pasture and soil health. The Landcare/Catchment
Management Authority Landholder Resource Kit will be distributed to provide
sustainable natural resource Managment education. Complementing this, a
revegetation project will see 3000 native species planted across peri urban
landholdings, enhancing biodiversity, habitat value and forming linkages with
remnant vegetation. Landholder engagement will take place utilising our
existing database, through local media and consulting Catchment Management
Authority technical staff. |

Introduced
dung beetles are an essential part of sustainable farming because they
increase soil carbon levels, improve nutrient cycling, increase the water
infiltration into soils and reduce pest fly numbers. However, many
landholders do not know if they have strong dung beetle populations on their
property, how to identify and monitor dung beetles, nor how to manage their
grazing patterns and chemical use in order to allow dung beetle communities
to flourish. |

Wisemans
Creek Willow Management Water Quality 2009 project. |
This
project will address the issue of crack willow invasion in the creeks around
the locality of Wisemans Creek, improving the biodiversity and hydrological
functioning of Captain Kings Creek and Sewells Creek. Saw flies have attacked
these willows over the past 3 years. More than 20% are dead or dying. As they
fall, the waterway becomes blocked and during high flows new channels are
created moving sediment down stream into Ben Chifley Dam. Willow removal will
ensure endemic aquatic and semi aquatic plants can re-colonise providing
favourable habitat for native fauna such as platypus, fish, turtles, nesting
water fowl and macro-invertebrates. |

Riparian
and aquatic habitat management, Third Crossing, Summer Hill Creek |
Project
aims to address the following land degradation issues including; Choking of
the stream by Willow logs and gouging of stream banks which causes erosion
and impedes natural flows required by aquatic flora and fauna; the
replacement of native vegetation by invasive species such as willows (not
weeping); Loss of biodiversity, including declining and threatened bird and
mammal species, e.g. Diamond Firetail and Platypus. Large masses of Willow
left to rot in the stream is undesirable as willow bark contains salicylic
acid, which may be toxic in large doses. Another issue is trampling of
phosphorus-rich river banks by stock, leading to erosion and eutrophication
of downstream storage area. |

MURRUMBURRAH LANDCARE |
Re-examining
the potential of a neglected resource: changing farm managers' attitudes to
native pasture management with reference to their production, resilience and
sustainability. |
Native
grass pastures are commonly found in the Binalong-Bookham area of the
southern tablelands of NSW and are frequently subjected to poor management
practices. This has resulted in run-down stands of local native grasses due
to overgrazing and the resultant erosion. Our project involves the collection
and analysis of soil samples, pasture growth measurements and species
composition changes on 3 native grass pasture sites in the Binalong-Bookham
area. Results will be publicised at 3 field days where local farmers and land
managers will be invited to inspect and compare the results of the collected
data. Ten fertilisers, both traditional and alternate, have been spread on
the trial plots as part of an earlier project and local farmers have
requested that this trial be continued in order to gain more knowledge and
experience in selecting and applying the fertilisers, determining cost
effectiveness and productivity increases and understanding their effects on
soil biology. |

Australian Controlled Traffic Farming
Association Inc |
Applying
grower training to achieve grain farm practice changes |
The
Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics reports grains
productivity is declining by 1.2% per annum. The driver is poor farm
management, the problem - poor triple bottom line results and farm and
community decline. This project will
form a group of about 15 growers who have completed Lachlan Catchment
Management Authority courses on Controlled Traffic Farming and other similar
courses. The project will hold group workshops and individual farm visits to
develop farm action plans for each grower, who becomes a demonstration farm.
Along with the group workshops, field days and visits to discuss progress,
issues and compare results in soils, landscapes and farms will be held. The
project will measure impacts with yield monitors, high resolution satellite
imagery (in budget), water use efficiency, soil health; measure changes in
farmer skills, capabilities and attitudes. |

Revegetation Project |
Mildura
Aboriginal Corporation is seeking to rehabilitate 10 ha of severely eroded
land on Warrakoo Station. The area which is on an escarpment close to the
Murray River has suffered from severe gully erosion and scalding caused by
historic overgrazing by stock and feral animals. The erosion has accelerated
in recent years because of prolonged drought. We wish to rehabilitate part of
the area so that erosion is stabilised and through careful selection of plant
species we will also restore biodiversity values. We will ensure that the
project area is protected from future grazing. Currently the erosion impacts
on water quality in the Murray River where it abounds a Living Murray Icon

Greening the Grainbelt Species List |
This
project shall develop a native species planting list for our area so as to
encourage the community to commit to reversing the long term decline of
native vegetation, both in terms of area and diversity. Landholders who have
undertaken plantings in the last decade will be consulted to compile
information on species diversity and associated rates of attrition. The
Australian National Herbarium will be consulted to assess the relevance of
this data and then provide advice so as to adapt the information into a more
user friendly format. The information for each species on the list shall then
be expanded upon so as to allow species selection for planting based upon
land type, climate, soil condition et cetera. Options for providing this list
as community web-based application will also be considered to distribute the
data as widely as possible enhancing community awareness of the species
suitable for the region. |

Biochar
information day and trials in Liston |
Local
landholders have indicated an interest in managing vegetation and soil carbon
to improve carbon sequestration across the landscape. The Liston area has
granite soils, some very coarse in nature, lacking fertility with very low
soil carbon levels. They have taken an active interest in biochar trials
taking place at NSW Industry and Investment and Wollongbar Research Station
and would like to know more about how this new technology can be applied
locally. This project will assist the
group to establish demonstration sites and also build skills and knowledge
through field day and workshop focussing on soil carbon. |

Knowledge
and Skills for Best Practice Riparian Management (BPRM) for Coastal Farming
Communities |
The
aim of the project is to create 3 demonstration sites and educational
resources that deliver best practice riparian management outcomes and
encourage the adoption of new practices and up skilling of farmers in the
Illawarra. The model will be packaged up and made available on the web for
use in other areas. The proponents will work with an environmental consultant
and the School of Earth and Environmental Science Landcare Illawarra and
Small Farms Network to rehabilitate and revegetate 1.5 km of sensitive
riparian areas. Activities will include wetland management, nutrient buffer
zones, increasing biodiversity and controlling invasive weeds. |

Springvale
integrated NRM plan implementation |
This
project represents another stage in the implementation of the Springvale
Landcare integrated Natural Resource Management plan. This will include
on-ground works combined with an extension / demonstration program to improve
both the biophysical ecosystem and the knowledge and skills base of the local
community. Across 4 sites, approximately 1.5km of riparian / upland swamp
zone will be protected and enhanced; a 2.5km biodiversity corridor created,
and 75ha of native grassland enhanced (productively and environmentally)
through an improved grazing management demonstration project (supported by
local agronomists, Department of Primary Industries and Catchment Management
Authority). Existing networks (Landcare, Catchment Management Authority,
Department of Primary Industries and the Conservation Management Network)
will be utilised to promote the project outcomes and 2 field days will be
held to demonstrate the principles utilised. |

aint Soils - getting the good dirt on microbes |
This
program will support landcare groups across the Upper Shoalhaven to carry out
sustainable agricultural practises across farms. The purpose is to provide
assistance to local landcare groups to trial biological based farming
techniques, such as building soil carbon through biological activation (such
as applying compost teas); strategic release and assessment of dung beetles
focussing on maintaining winter active species, and encouraging mulching,
composting and green manure crops. |

Tantulean
Creek Rehabilitation |
The
project is to repair existing erosion control structures along Tantulean
Creek, undertake revegetation and fence repair to exclude stock, and to
continue active Broom control and raise awareness about Broom to new
landowners. Tantulean Creek is a tributary of Mongarlowe River. Increased
catchment run-off has caused severe stream bed lowering and incision, and
resulted in bank collapse, loss of riparian vegetation, and further erosion.
Infrastructure along the creek is also threatened. Mongarlowe Landcare has
carried out a series of projects on the creek including the installation of
bed-control structures, revegetation and Broom control. |

SNOWY RIVER LANDCARE INCORPORATED |
Mitigate
the negative impact on grassy woodland and the agricultural productive
capacity of an area affected by Eucalyptus dieback in the Snowy River region |
The
continued loss of Eucalyptus trees as a result of a variety of factors,
collectively known as dieback, is an ongoing and widespread ecological issue
in this region and throughout rural NSW. The extent to which dieback will
negatively impact on biodiversity and future production is unknown though it
is highly likely that, over the long term, it will lead to an overall
reduction in both animal and vegetative output. This project aims to maintain
the 'health' of grassy woodlands in the Snowy River region by preventing the
spread of noxious weeds in affected areas, and developing and implementing
strategies for woodland regeneration. |

Biochar
benefits for Buckwaroon |
Research
conducted by the NSW Department of Primary Industries has scientifically
demonstrated that biochar can be an effective tool for sustainable farming in
NSW. This work adds to the growing international literature, compiled in
Biochar for Environmental Management published by Earthscan. The project will
assess the opportunity on a local level so that our land managers can gain
understanding and access to this new technology. The project incorporates the
assessment of the process for utilising invasive weed and other waste biomass
in the region for the production of biochar, and the viability of the
application of biochar in local farming systems to achieve long-term
environmental and sustainability outcomes. |
