CAG09-00094 NSW Border Rivers-Gwydir GRANITE BORDERS LANDCARE COMMITTEE INCORPORATED Deepwater Landcare Group Soils in Focus in Deepwater This project will develop skills and knowledge of landholders in the Deepwater area regarding the monitoring and management of soil health. The area has typically acid granite soils with low organic soil carbon levels, often resulting in reduced groundcover, poor pasture growth and over grazing. These issues also contribute to other natural resource problems such as soil erosion, poor water quality and sedimentation of waterways. This project will deliver improved skills and knowledge in the monitoring and management of soil health through a combination of workshops, soil testing and field days. $17,772.73
CAG09-00340 NSW Border Rivers-Gwydir GWYMAC INCORPORATED Macintyre Development Unit Building Peri Urban Capacity and Biodiversity in the NW Slopes of NSW The Inverell region has seen a marked increase in the number of peri urban landholders. These landholders from land on the fringe of urban centres demonstrate a lack of knowledge of sustainable NRM and its importance. Their proximity to farming land and urban centres means this group is a vital link in our region's sustainability. This project will hold a series of 4 field days will be held and focus on themes of biodiversity, weed identification and management, groundcover / pasture and soil health. The Landcare/Catchment Management Authority Landholder Resource Kit will be distributed to provide sustainable natural resource Managment education. Complementing this, a revegetation project will see 3000 native species planted across peri urban landholdings, enhancing biodiversity, habitat value and forming linkages with remnant vegetation. Landholder engagement will take place utilising our existing database, through local media and consulting Catchment Management Authority technical staff. $13,772.73

CAG09-00859 NSW Border Rivers-Gwydir GRANITE BORDERS LANDCARE COMMITTEE INCORPORATED Northern Tablelands Dung Beetle Express Know Your Dung Beetles : training for farmers on the benefits of healthy dung beetle populations Introduced dung beetles are an essential part of sustainable farming because they increase soil carbon levels, improve nutrient cycling, increase the water infiltration into soils and reduce pest fly numbers. However, many landholders do not know if they have strong dung beetle populations on their property, how to identify and monitor dung beetles, nor how to manage their grazing patterns and chemical use in order to allow dung beetle communities to flourish. $18,454.55
CAG09-00347 NSW Central West   WIRADJURI WELLINGTON ABORIGINAL TOWN COMMON COMMITTEE Common Fence for Common Good - protecting Remnant Vegetation and creating a Nature Walk Fencing will be constructed to protect 100 hectares of remnant woodland. Feral animals will be excluded, illegal rubbish dumping will be prevented and management of the woodland facilitated. A 750 m nature walk will connect an already protected riverine ecosystem on the banks of the Macquarie River, with native grassy woodland, passing through native grassland. A public education and awareness program will be undertaken with a printed guide to native species and a web page to publicise and educate. $20,000.00
CAG09-00406 NSW Central West   BEN CHIFLEY CATCHMENT STEERING COMMITTEE INCORPORATED Wisemans Creek Willow Management Water Quality 2009 project. This project will address the issue of crack willow invasion in the creeks around the locality of Wisemans Creek, improving the biodiversity and hydrological functioning of Captain Kings Creek and Sewells Creek. Saw flies have attacked these willows over the past 3 years. More than 20% are dead or dying. As they fall, the waterway becomes blocked and during high flows new channels are created moving sediment down stream into Ben Chifley Dam. Willow removal will ensure endemic aquatic and semi aquatic plants can re-colonise providing favourable habitat for native fauna such as platypus, fish, turtles, nesting water fowl and macro-invertebrates. $20,000.00
CAG09-00423 NSW Central West   Summer Hill Creekcare Inc. Riparian and aquatic habitat management, Third Crossing, Summer Hill Creek Project aims to address the following land degradation issues including; Choking of the stream by Willow logs and gouging of stream banks which causes erosion and impedes natural flows required by aquatic flora and fauna; the replacement of native vegetation by invasive species such as willows (not weeping); Loss of biodiversity, including declining and threatened bird and mammal species, e.g. Diamond Firetail and Platypus. Large masses of Willow left to rot in the stream is undesirable as willow bark contains salicylic acid, which may be toxic in large doses. Another issue is trampling of phosphorus-rich river banks by stock, leading to erosion and eutrophication of downstream storage area. $15,884.00
CAG09-00559 NSW Central West   ORANGE BATHURST DISTRICT Landcare MNGMNT COMMITTEE INC Supporting sustainable agriculture online in the Central Tablelands (Orange - Bathurst Landcare District The aim of this project is to reprint a third batch of our natural resource toolkit CD and to develop a Landcare website for our district. This project through the enhancement of community engagement and information sharing aims to further promote and foster the uptake of sustainable farm practices in the Central Tablelands. Issues we have focussed on in our district include riparian management, soil health, perennial pasture development and carbon sequestration. The development of a website will provide Landcarers with a local list of what is on in the district and will allow us to share experiences of landholders and Landcare groups through the uploading of digital photostories. $16,545.45

This project will allow us to do something practical to restore the endangered river flat forest down to the edge of the Hawkesbury River through the removal of Weeds of National Significance, particularly Lantana, and the establishment of native plants to provide a natural riparian corridor. This will assist with the prevention of stormwater and pollutants entering the Hawkesbury River and be included in our environment management system. Broken Bay Oysters has good links through our small local community and the broader Hawkesbury estuary community. This project will engage coastal communities in natural resource management through on-ground public workdays. $19,521.82
CAG09-00313 NSW Hunter-Central Rivers   BINALONG LANDCARE SUB GROUP HARDEN MURRUMBURRAH LANDCARE Re-examining the potential of a neglected resource: changing farm managers' attitudes to native pasture management with reference to their production, resilience and sustainability. Native grass pastures are commonly found in the Binalong-Bookham area of the southern tablelands of NSW and are frequently subjected to poor management practices. This has resulted in run-down stands of local native grasses due to overgrazing and the resultant erosion. Our project involves the collection and analysis of soil samples, pasture growth measurements and species composition changes on 3 native grass pasture sites in the Binalong-Bookham area. Results will be publicised at 3 field days where local farmers and land managers will be invited to inspect and compare the results of the collected data. Ten fertilisers, both traditional and alternate, have been spread on the trial plots as part of an earlier project and local farmers have requested that this trial be continued in order to gain more knowledge and experience in selecting and applying the fertilisers, determining cost effectiveness and productivity increases and understanding their effects on soil biology. $20,000.00
CAG09-00068 NSW Lachlan   HOVELLS CREEK LANDCARE GROUP INCORPORATED Protection and enhancement of Lachlan Catchment (NSW) riverine environments by fencing and tree planting. This project addresses the following local landcare issues and Caring for Country program targets: exclusion of domestic livestock from sensitive riverine environment, establishment of cross property biodiversity and wildlife habitat corridors, removal of Weeds of National Significance (Blackberries), reduction of streambank erosion, reduction of silt and salt load in the Lachlan River system, improving the knowledge, skills and engagement of farmer landholders, and involving volunteer landcarers from outside the region. CAG09-00610 NSW Southern Rivers   MONGARLOWE LANDCARE INCORPORATED Tantulean Creek Rehabilitation The project is to repair existing erosion control structures along Tantulean Creek, undertake revegetation and fence repair to exclude stock, and to continue active Broom control and raise awareness about Broom to new landowners. Tantulean Creek is a tributary of Mongarlowe River. Increased catchment run-off has caused severe stream bed lowering and incision, and resulted in bank collapse, loss of riparian vegetation, and further erosion. Infrastructure along the creek is also threatened. Mongarlowe Landcare has carried out a series of projects on the creek including the installation of bed-control structures, revegetation and Broom control. $17,818.18
CAG09-00746 NSW Southern Rivers   SNOWY RIVER LANDCARE INCORPORATED Mitigate the negative impact on grassy woodland and the agricultural productive capacity of an area affected by Eucalyptus dieback in the Snowy River region The continued loss of Eucalyptus trees as a result of a variety of factors, collectively known as dieback, is an ongoing and widespread ecological issue in this region and throughout rural NSW. The extent to which dieback will negatively impact on biodiversity and future production is unknown though it is highly likely that, over the long term, it will lead to an overall reduction in both animal and vegetative output. This project aims to maintain the 'health' of grassy woodlands in the Snowy River region by preventing the spread of noxious weeds in affected areas, and developing and implementing strategies for woodland regeneration. $17,500.00
CAG09-00338 NSW Western   Buckwaroon Catchment Landcare Group Biochar benefits for Buckwaroon Research conducted by the NSW Department of Primary Industries has scientifically demonstrated that biochar can be an effective tool for sustainable farming in NSW. This work adds to the growing international literature, compiled in Biochar for Environmental Management published by Earthscan. The project will assess the opportunity on a local level so that our land managers can gain understanding and access to this new technology. The project incorporates the assessment of the process for utilising invasive weed and other waste biomass in the region for the production of biochar, and the viability of the application of biochar in local farming systems to achieve long-term environmental and sustainability outcomes. $19,545.45
