from July 2009
Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges The Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges NRM Board proposal will support land managers through a suite of on-ground works, awareness raising and educational activities that assist rural communities in natural resources management. Key actions will achieve an increased area of habitat restoration and remnant vegetation that is appropriately managed, mitigation of priority pest animal and plant threats to key biodiversity assets, improved soil management to increase the sustainability of primary production and greater land manager awareness and skills in natural resource management (NRM). All components of the project will be delivered in partnership with local NRM community groups and councils throughout the rural and peri-urban areas of the AMLR region. $4,418,000
(over 2 years)
Alinytjara Wilurara This remote 250,000 km² region encompasses the far north west of South Australia, including diverse and arid landscapes and important cultural sites. The land is largely set aside for conservation and traditional Aboriginal use and occupation. The AW NRM Board proposal addresses multiple Caring for our Country targets engaging all three significant land management groups in the region - Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY), Maralinga Tjarutja (MT) and Yalata. Regional programs work with traditional owners on traditional and contemporary landscape management in important ecological and cultural areas, preserving, restoring, and monitoring. Programs target the threatening processes (camels and other pests, weeds particularly buffel grass); uncontrolled access; water management; and investigations to enhance NRM knowledge in the region and position the Aboriginal communities to meet the challenges of climate change and provide opportunities for ecosystem services. $1,751,000
(over 1 year)
Eyre Peninsula The Eyre Peninsula NRM proposal balances sustainable productive farming practices and the ongoing protection and enhancement of the region's ecological assets. It will deliver significant landscape scale change through four key program areas, supported by an integrated approach to Aboriginal and community engagement. Key outcomes of the proposal include a reduction in the risk and incidence of soil erosion events; reduction of rabbit populations over 400,000ha, with broader effect over 1.2million hectares, allowing threatened plant species listed in the EPBC Act to regenerate; addressing invasive species threats impacting on High Conservation-Value Aquatic Ecosystems. These major achievements will be supported by increases to volunteer involvement in managing natural resources; improved land-management practices by organisations and individuals; and the building of stronger partnerships with Aboriginal communities. $4,572,900
(over 4 years)
Kangaroo Island The Kangaroo Island NRM Board package balances sustainable productive farming practices and the ongoing protection and enhancement of the region's ecological assets. It will deliver significant landscape scale change through three key program areas, supported by an integrated approach to community engagement. Key outcomes of the proposal include improved riparian, aquatic and marine habitats and biodiversity by addressing the degraded state of the catchment of the Cygnet River; a biosecurity package to reduce the critical threats to biodiversity and primary production on Kangaroo Island; improved bushland condition, knowledge of fire ecology and fire management practices. These major achievements will be supported by increases to volunteer involvement in managing natural resources; improved land-management practices by organisations and individuals; and the building of stronger partnerships with landholders. $2,113,200
(over 2 years)
Northern and Yorke The Northern and Yorke NRM Board package balances sustainable productive farming practices and the ongoing protection and enhancement of the region's ecological assets. It will deliver significant landscape scale change through several program areas, supported by an integrated approach to Aboriginal and community engagement. Key outcomes of the proposal include a reduction in the risk and incidence of soil acidification and soil erosion; control of weeds of national significance and suppression of rabbit populations over 4,000 hectares, allowing native bushland, including threatened plant species listed in the EPBC Act, to regenerate. These major achievements will be supported by increases to volunteer involvement in managing natural resources; improved land-management practices by organisations and individuals; and the building of stronger partnerships with Aboriginal communities. $3,134,000
(over 2 years)
South Australian Arid lands The South Australian Arid lands NRM package balances sustainable productive farming practices and the ongoing protection and enhancement of the region's ecological assets. It will deliver significant landscape scale change through three key program areas and supported by an integrated approach to Aboriginal and community engagement. Key outcomes of the proposal include a reduction in the risk and incidence of soil erosion events; control of weeds of national significance and feral vertebrate populations over an area of 15,000 km²; better management of ecosystems associated with rock-holes and other areas of cultural and ecological significance on pastoral properties in the Flinders and Gawler Ranges region. This sparsely-populated region is characterized by very large properties and the control measures are correspondingly broad-scale in nature. The achievement of targets will be supported by increases to volunteer involvement in managing natural resources; improved land-management practices by organisations and individuals; and stronger partnerships with Aboriginal communities. $3,910,500
(over 4 years)
South Australian Murray-Darling Basin The South Australian Murray-Darling Basin NRM Board package balances sustainable productive farming practices and ongoing protection and enhancement of regional ecological assets. It will deliver significant landscape-scale change through eight key program areas, supported by an integrated approach to Aboriginal and community engagement. Key outcomes of include increasing priority native habitat managed to reduce critical threats by 18,650 hectares; a reduction in the risk and incidence of soil erosion events; reduction of rabbit populations over 11,000 hectares, allowing threatened plant species listed in the EPBC Act to regenerate; addressing invasive species threats impacting on Ramsar and High Conservation-Value Aquatic Ecosystems. These major achievements will be supported by increases to volunteer involvement in managing natural resources; improved land-management practices by organisations and individuals; and the building of stronger partnerships with Aboriginal communities. $10,779,456
